James Schultz Counseling Newsletter

News from James Schultz Counseling!
The last year has been full of developments in my private practice and exciting experiences through my work providing experiential fly fishing therapy to at-risk youth. I'm pleased to share some of these highlights with the Division of Youth Corrections.

About James James Schultz Counseling provides art therapy and experiential fly fishing therapy which integrates mindfulness therapy and DBT skills with the healing power of fly fishing. Both services are tailored to fit any stage of treatment through the DYC journey. James is dual-trained as an Art Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor and is soon to become one of only 3,000 Certified Fly Casting Instructors in the world.

2016 Highlights
Fly Fishing Film Tour donated the film from the Fly Fishing Film Festival which was shown at Lookout and ROP. The Tour has committed to donating the 2017 film, as well.
Client Manager, Chip Custer, donated thousands of dollars of his father's fly tying supplies to the program. Thank you, Chip!
Lookout Mountain received its facility fishing license! Kids at Lookout can fish for free!
Youth at DYC facilities have earned four trip sessions. One session provided 13 "firsts" for one client, which included his first time seeing rams, osprey, and bald eagles in the wild!
In-Facility Experiential Fly Fishing sessions have been facilitated every week since March.
With more community support and DYC interaction, we have the potential to incorporate trail and stream restoration in volunteer and community service programs through Trout Unlimited and other organizations. This could be a link to repairing the environment and the community. We also have the potential for a restorative justice program for youth to make flies that can be sold to raise funds for victim compensation and other services. The fly fishing therapy program also has the potential to integrate with the culinary program at Lookout.
Sometimes the gifts of nature may not be catching fish, but seeing something like rams in the wild! Click on the photo to see the video!

Building Communities on Two Sides of Youth Correction Services Industry support from fly fishing professionals and leading manufacturers, Mystic, Allen, Redington, Douglas, and RIO fly lines has grown as the industry is embracing DYC's commitment to offering experiential fly fishing therapy to at-risk youth. Colorado's top fly tyers are volunteering their time to coach me in fly tying in order to improve the sessions provided to these youth. It has been an honor to connect these two seemingly disparate communities - fly fishing and corrections - to serve these kids. [Photo: Adam Nickel, local fishing guide & fishing nut]
